Clamshell Quilt Top {finished}

My Clamshell Quilt Top is finished!

This is my new favorite quilt, I enjoyed the process so much, I am already thinking about making another one in the near future.

This quilt is completely hand-sewn, piece by piece, mostly on my dining room table. There were days  that I sat outside on the back porch with some music and sometimes just listening to the birds chirping ... stitching away. I enjoy the slow paste of hand stitching, there is something therapeutic about working quietly with your hands.

There are 38 rows for a total of 589 clamshells.
The quilt top measures 77" x 61."
I used my AccuQuilt Go and the 4" clamshell die.

I hope you all doing well and making beautiful things!

Best, Maryse

  1. Well once again, I am in awe of you Maryse! This is an absolutely breathtaking quilt! I love the layout you chose for your colors and the scrappiness of all the clam shells! Very often, when you show your latest quilt I too think "this is my new favorite", LOL! Your description of the hand stitching makes me want to do it more often too. I had to smile when I saw that you had a video of your quilt top, but then I pressed play and it really is wonderful to watch... especially here in NY where it is so cold and grey today. Wonderful work!

  3. Absolutely beautiful. I'm amazed how quickly you were able to do the hand sewing. I have a hand sewing project, but it is very slowly coming together. And your right. There is something so special about hand sewing.

  5. It's beautiful, and must have involved so much work. I've done 2 rows on clam shells on a quilt and that took ages. I guess you found a method that works for you. I really admire how much work must have gone into this. It looks wonderful. Well done.

  9. Wow. This turned out so beautifully. I just finished a clamshell quilt and used a quilt as you go method that just allowed me to get too "off" with my clams. I will have to try hand piecing next time.

  11. I'm in awe because one, I don't have near your patience for hand-sewing, and two, this is truly heirloom quilting. Maryse, you did such a wonderful job balancing the colors throughout the quilt. I know you used a design wall, but even to choose among so many pieces to achieved even darks and bright is terribly hard. I think you did it well!

Thank you so much for linking this up to Pink Doxies Pet Project Show. I love that it's there!

  12. Absolutely lovely! I really admire your patience in doing such a large clamshell quilt. As much as I love hand sewing, I don't know if I could take on such an extensive project, let alone considering a second!

  13. Amazing and so beautiful with all those colors.
I understand what you mean with therapeutic effect of sewing. A lot of stitches a day, keeps the docter away!!!!
    Congrats with this beautiful finish.
    Love from Amsterdam.

  15. Amazing! I enjoy hand stitching but have never attempted anything like this. I like the way the low volume rows allow the colorful clamshells to really shine. It's a great use of colors and prints. Beautiful!

  27. Beautiful! I have 2 quilts in the works that will be all hand-sewn. I enjoy hand-sewing when we go on camping trips while I'm just sitting in my camper. I sew sitting on my porch, too. Because I hate to be inside the house in nice weather. I'll get them done in a couple of years...
